For wall or ceiling viewing:

For casual family gaming:

Three things to understand before buying

1. Light changes the picture

Projectors look clearer when less light falls on the wall or screen. Entry-level and portable models are generally most enjoyable in a dim or dark room. Outdoor viewing should usually begin after dusk.

2. Native resolution matters

Native 720p can suit casual viewing and smaller setups. Native 1080p displays more detail and is worth considering for larger images or more regular viewing. Accepting a 1080p signal does not make a projector native 1080p.

3. Choose how you will watch

HDMI is a reliable option for compatible streaming devices, laptops, consoles, DVD players and Blu-ray players. Smart apps and screen mirroring add convenience, but app and content-provider restrictions can vary.

Outdoor use does not mean weatherproof. Keep the projector, screen accessories, soundbar, power supplies and electrical connections dry and protected from rain, moisture and liquids. Do not use an inflatable screen in rain, storms or strong wind.

Do you need a projector screen?

A smooth, flat, light-coloured wall can be suitable for casual viewing. A screen provides a defined image area and helps when the wall surface, colour or available size is unsuitable. Some Laser models include a cloth or inflatable screen, but inclusions differ.

Check sound and power

Built-in speakers may suit a smaller room. For bigger spaces, check for Bluetooth audio output or a physical connection to compatible soundbars or speakers. Portable does not automatically mean battery-powered.

Will a projector work during the day?

A projector may produce an image during the day, but ambient light can make it look washed out. For a clearer result, reduce the light falling on the wall or screen, close curtains or blinds, or wait until after dusk for outdoor viewing.

Should I choose a 720p or 1080p projector?

Can I watch Netflix, YouTube or other streaming services?

Do portable projectors have a built-in battery?
