New MPEG-4 Channels
Why is it important to get a new Set Top Box or Smart Media Player with MPEG-4 compatibility?
From November 2015, new SD and HD TV Channels are being rolled out across Australia. These new channels are being broadcast is a format called MPEG-4.
MPEG-4 is gradually replacing the previous broadcast format called MPEG-2, which has become an aging technology and not able to deliver some of the latest content available today.
The problem is however, that your old set top box or other hardware may not be MPEG-4 compatible, which means you may have problems receiving these new channels.
Some of these new channels are 9HD, 9Life, 7Flix, TEN HD, WIN HD, 7HD and others.
New TV Channels:
SBS Food Network. The channel airs programs about food and cooking, from cultures around the world. It is part of the SBS suite of channels and can be seen on digital channel 33.
9HD is a high definition version of Channel 9. It shows exactly the same content as that channel but with better picture and sound quality. In broadcasts on digital channel 90 in metropolitan areas and channel 80 in some regional areas. For viewers who receive WIN TV, this channel is called WIN HD and is seen on Channel 80. You must have a HD television to receive this channel.
9Life on digital channel 94, a lifestyle channel from the Nine Network
7flix on digital channel 76, a general entertainment channel from the Seven Network. In the southern areas of the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba this channel is broadcast on digital channel 66.
7HD on digital channel 70 is available in Melbourne and Adelaide and shows exactly the same content as Channel 7 but with better picture and sound quality. In Sydney, Brisbane and Perth Channel 70 shows the same content a Channel 73 - 7Mate but with better picture and sound quality. You must have a HD television to receive this channel.
Ten HD is a high definition version of Channel Ten. It shows exactly the same content as that channel but with better picture and sound quality. In broadcasts on digital channel 13. You must have a HD television to receive this channel.
DVB-T is the digital broadcast standard that has been chosen for use in Australia. It comes from the "Digital Video Broadcasting" family of standards. This family covers things like Satellite and Cable broadcasting, but in our case we're interested in terrestrial broadcasting, the "over the air" broadcasting most people will be familiar with. With content these days being produced in digital format, the move to digital terrestrial television (i.e., digital TV) from the decades-old analog TV standard makes sense. For end users, it allows you to get sharper images (e.g., HD formats up to 1,920 x 1,080 pixels) and wide screen formats (e.g., 16:9), compared to the 720 x 576-pixel resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio limits that analog TV has. With digital TV, it’s also possible to enjoy better sound quality (e.g., surround sound; if the content supports it, and you’ve the correct equipment), multi-language subtitles, and electronic program guides (EPGs).
EPG (Electronic Program Guide)
Electronic Program Guides (EPGs) display broadcast and scheduling information for TV. They can be displayed on any digital TV, on certain websites or through a mobile app. The B15 gives you access to these Electronic Program Guides to set reminders and to record your favourite programs.
PVR (Personal Video Recorder)
A Personal Video Recorder is a stand-alone unit that combines a digital set top box (STB) with an internal hard disk drive (HDD) on which it records TV content in digital format, eliminating the need for tapes or disks. Record your favourite programs to watch later. You can also fast forward and rewind live TV using the B15 Set Top Box Smart Media Player.
Time Shift allows you to Pause, Fast Forward and Rewind Live TV.
